No, I’m not giving up Social Media for Lent. My 2013 Lenten discipline is to give thanks to God for those who have helped me to grow into who God intends for me to be and become. See all of my 2013 Lenten Thanks here.
My grandfather Esteban de los Reyes* was the sweetest man I have ever known. The stories and memories that exemplify his deep well of kindness, generosity and devotion are too numerous to name and so amazing most would not believe them. As our family often recounts stories that revolve around my grandfather and the family that he and my grandmother created, we usually end the telling with, “You can’t make this stuff up.”
As I reflect on his life and the impact that he made on so many, he gifted us with emotions that are true and good, the sharing of love and resources without question and a commitment to family and community that is profound. To many observers – even to some family and friends – I suspect that he was seen as too kind of heart, too generous of spirit and devoted to a fault, but if I have inherited even a smidgeon of who my grandfather was in these regards, I count myself blessed.
And speaking of his deep well of emotions, I was barely able write today’s Lenten post without tearing up a little . . . okay, a lot. Thanks Grandpa.
Today I give thanks for my grandfather, Esteban de los Reyes.
*When my grandfather immigrated to the United States, like so many before, his name was anglicized for easier pronunciation — so in his time in the United States, he was known as, Steve Reyes. But come on, Esteban de los Reyes is waaaaaay cool.
