No, I’m not giving up Social Media for Lent. My 2013 Lenten discipline is to give thanks to God for those who have helped me to grow into who God intends for me to be and become. See all of my 2013 Lenten Thanks here.
Sitting here in New York with my mother, I figure I better than her before I get any, “You thanked God for your dogs before you mother?” comments from some auntie, I ‘spose the crazy lady who birthed me should get some blog time 😉
For those who know our story, you know how amazing my mother, Sarah, is. From single motherhood to raising four kids, seven granddaughters and numerous more adopted siblings and grandbabies, you will know that her heart and spirit are always open to take others in. And oh yeah, all the while, worked in the California state legislature for 25 years, taught high school for six years and now pastoring for the past 14 year.
With too many traits to name, I think the greatest gift my mother has given me is the joy and importance it of bringing people together and feeding them. As long as I can remember, there were people being invited to your home for holidays and family gatherings because they had nowhere else to go; and with pause, they would always be absorbed right into the Reyes chaos. There were always extra gifts for unexpected people at Christmas, more food than one crew could ever devour and a belief that she has the inalienable right to hold any baby that is carried across the threshold. Yep, that’s my mom, who we affectionately call, “That crazy lady.”
Today I give thanks for my momz, Rev. Dr. Sarah Reyes Gibbs
