March 3, 2015
Because of the generosity of a family friend, my two daughters and I are at the 2015 Cactus League Spring Training opening game between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. This was my first time at Spring Training – hopefully not my last – and having two of my kids with me makes it all that much more fun.
Out first of three games was at Hohokam park and we got there with plenty of time to spare. After figuring out what we could or could not bring into the park, we mad our way to snag some autographs.
As we entered the park there was a table with a few folks that played a little ball in their time, Rollie Fingers, Blue Moon Odom, Ferguson Jenkins and Bert “Campy” Campaneris. For $20 that would go to a local charity, one could get an autograph and take a picture or two.
The girls took selfies with Rollie Fingers and, in honor of my grandpa Reyes, who loved Bert Campaneris, I posed with Campy. I know that somewhere, somehow, my grandpa Reyes smiled a bit. I don’t think he ever made it to Spring Training or met Bert Campaneris, so I think he would be tickled that I, and his great-granddaughters were able to.
Oh, and the Athletics beat the Giants, 9-4, so it was a pretty good day.
See you tomorrow.
