#40WordPrayer on Cheating — Bruce Reyes-Chow

#40WordPrayer on CHEATING

You shall not cheat one another, but you shall fear your God;
for I am the Lord your God.
— Leviticus 25:17

We’re taught to take every advantage,

that the ends justify the means,

and that we should win at all costs.

We lie. We cheat. We steal.

When our prosperity is built

on the suffering, misfortune, and desperation of others,

God, provoke us to change our ways.

Amen.

Maybe society teaches that cheating is OK—well not maybe, we do. We’re taught that cheating in order to win is OK, that the rules apply only to other people, and that the ends justify the means. If the referee doesn’t catch you, you didn’t commit a foul; if you don’t get pulled over, you weren’t really speeding; if you can convince someone to make a deal that is bad for them, it’s their choice.
