#40WordPrayer on Hyperbole — Bruce Reyes-Chow

#40WordPrayer on HYPERBOLE

God looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.
They have all fallen away, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good, no, not one.
— Psalm 53:2–3

In my worst moments, I KNOW no one loves me,

everyone is against me,

and there is not a person who will care for me.

The exaggerations born out of our deepest pain

are equaled only by the comfort born out of your love.

Amen.

There is a place for hyperbole and exaggeration in life. While we can’t allow these things to drive relationships, legislation, or public policy, we can appreciate this kind of expression for what it is and what it does—a powerful expression of emotion and a signal to the rest of us of the depth of passion with which that emotion is felt.
