#40WordPrayer on Judgment — Bruce Reyes-Chow

#40WordPrayer on JUDGMENT

[A]ccording to my gospel, God, through Jesus Christ,
will judge the secret thoughts of all.
— Romans 2:16

As I go through the day, I judge.

Sometimes I exercise wisdom, empathy, and good judgment.

Other times I inflict arrogance, cynicism, and condescension.

God, keep my good judgment from becoming destructive judgment.

And remind me that ultimate judgment belongs to you and only you.

Amen.

Being judgmental is easy. It is often built on fear of the unknown, and eventually it breaks down community. Having good judgment is difficult. It takes time and attention, but it ultimately builds up community. Seeing what goes on in all aspects of society, I fear that we are much more inclined to be judgmental than to have good judgment, and I lament those times when I participate in the tearing down and not the building up.
