#40WordPrayer on Revenge — Bruce Reyes-Chow

#40WordPrayer on REVENGE

Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
From you let my vindication come;
let your eyes see the right.
— Psalm 17:1-2

God, please crush my enemies.

You see what they’ve done,

the pain they’ve caused, the hurt they’ve inflicted.

While revenge would feel good, you call us to love.

And while retribution would be sweet, you call us to bless.

God, this is not easy, but I will try.

Amen.

Yeah, it’s probably good that I don’t have access to any gismo or that [SMITE] button that would give me the power to decide who should remain earthbound and who should not. Because like most people, if left up to me and if I had that kind of power, there would soon be few people left anywhere—sometimes an awfully attractive thought but also a very lonely one.
