And a little Friday musical interlude

I have a few folks that help me stay at least aware of somethings that are happening in the realm of the kewl kids in terms of music, tech etc.  Usually sent via my pownce network, here is a video that was sent to me today, My Drive Thru by Santogold, Julian Casablancas, N.E.R.D produced by Pharrell.  There was something about this one struck as very cool in its technology and creativity.

This sure is a long way from the first music video ever played on MTV.

And then there is one of my all-time favorites.

Ooops was that out loud?

Bruce's Top 10 Essential Christmas Albums

Img_0829 Seems that Christmas brings out the cheese in even the most cynical of my friends.  You know who you are and may out yourselves if you choose.  This phenomenon is very cool and I affirm the inner cheesy/drippy spirit that people embrace during the holidays.  Apparently this periodic expression of emotion also brings judgment upon those of us who are more consistently cheesy the rest of the year.  Now rarely do I succumb to defending myself against insults and name calling that is hurled in my direction, but in this case, I must relent.  I feel compelled to defend my Christmas honor and make sure that folks understand that I do not unilaterally hate Christmas or the Christmas carols.  Yes, I may prefer to wait to sing Christmas carols in worship until post-birth of JC, but I still love the Christmas carols in other contexts.  So . . . let me take you through my top 10 Christmas albums that are currently in the rotation.

My essential 10, not ranked and w/o any snarky commentary.

Richard Cheese

Screenshot_2
Okay, so after a vacation full of blogging coming home to a big move AND church work is not yielding much thoughtful posting.  Today seemed a little more overwhleming, so thought I would listen to an album that is just plan funny.  If you do not crack a smile listening to the stylings of Richard Cheese, you may actually be dead inside.  Sorry, the truth must be spoken.

To have a listen head on over the Music Bar Section of the Richard Cheese Website and just let it play the background.  My personal favorites Baby Got Back and The Girl is Mine.

And bonus of all bonuses, he is playing in San Francisco at the end of the month.  We are SOOOOOOOO there.  We already have our tickets so if you are able to make it, lets make it a party.  They are not cheap, but by that time we will need a goof belly laugh.

Props to Laurell Hubick

Laurell Just got back from the Laurell Hubick concert at The Rock here in San Francisco.  Wish there were more folks to see her and hear about the Not For Sale Campaign - more on that later - but let me offer some thoughts on Laurell.  Also, if you want to see some picture from the evenings, click here.

1) She sounds just like her CD.  Pure voice with kind of a Ginny Owens thing going on.
2) She is darn right nice.  My two daughters really wanted to get an autograph and even though one fell asleep  and the other didn't even stay, she was gracious.
3) Her lyrics and style are solid and moving.

You should definitely take a listen over her website.  You can also see her on MySpace and Facebook.

Better yet, if you are in SoCal on Monday, July 9th at 7:00, you can see her in person.

Brain Candy for the Soul: Episode 8

EPISODE VIII - What the?!?!?!?  Yes, pop culture filtered by yours truly.  A waste of time?  The pulse of contemporary culture? Nope, just weekly rant and reflection about the sites and sounds that have stimulated my brain for good or bad, and now regurgitated for your reading pleasure.

Playpod_2 PODCASTS - If you have a few minutes you don't want, you can also listen to the podcast here, visit www.pod.reyes-chow.com or subscribe via iTunes to http://feeds.feedburner.com/RCpod.

Teknochekcollision_2 MUSIC //  Slavic Soul Party
Huh?!?!?  Yes, that's right, after hearing the interview of this band on NPR - source of all knowledge - I took a listen and bought their newest CD, TeknochekCollision. This album is really fun.  Balkan foundations mixed with some jazz, blues and rock rhythms.  The percussion and brass are particularly good and you just get this sense that these folks are having a grand old time making some fun music.  Visit their Official Website and take a listen.  My favorite track is "Never Gonna Let You Go."  [BRC on Last FM].

300a_2 MOVIE // Six Pack Spartan Abs
One of the funniest movie reviews I ever read about a movie that I never saw was Poplicks' 10 Things I Learned from Watching 300.  Only two months later, I headed to the theater on my day off and sat through this entertaining, but a little over-the-top bloody, testosterone-enhanced and oiled-body festival of men being men.  I think Poplicks tainted my experience because I just kept giggling at all the wrong moments, I mean come on - #2, Persian corpses make great cinderblocks. - now that is funny when you watch this movie.  Now don't get me wrong, I am up for the gratuitous beheading and honorable wars just as much as the next guy, but not sure if it was worth all the hype.  Still, if you can catch it for a matinée on the big screen or IMAX, check it out.  And oh yes, how many movies have you seen this year that has the IMDB tag stabbed in the mouth?  Now THAT is reason enough to go.

Img_2914 DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS // DCI 2007
Okay, this will not be a regular part of these Friday posts, but let me geek out for just a minute.   As I talked about in my DCI post a few weeks ago, the family trudged to the Moonlight Classic to watch one of the best youth activities in the WORLD, drum and bugle corps.  Don't hate, if you have never done it, you just won't understand.  In any case it was a grand time.  Evelyn thought it was cool and is ready to be shipped off for the summer to march color guard and the little ones liked the colorful "costumes" though it got a little boring.  You can see our pictures of the event, here as well as the Flickr DCI group.  Needless to say it was great to sit in the stands and glory daze a bit while Vanguard was blowing your hair back with the blissful sounds of BRASS!
2007 DCI Predictions: The Mandarins of Sacramento will be crowd-pleasers all year because this year's book is AWESOME - props to Dan Fong - and the Santa Clara Vanguard will win in all on August 11, in Pasadena.  You heard it here first, well maybe not first, but you heard it here.

Winona_ryder19 WHERE HAVE YOU GONE? // Winona Ryder
Boyhood crush aside - well not totally aside - what is going on with Winona?  Where is she?  I had always thought that she was going to become one of the power actresses of our day - forget Mr Deeds - but it seems like she has dropped off the map.  Yes, there was that little shoplifting thing, but folks have come back from far worse than that.  All one has to do is remember Heathers, Girl Interrupted, Little Women, Edward Scissorhands and The One with Rachel's Big Kiss you too will wonder, where have you gone Winona.   It seems like she may be making a small comeback with a few films in post-production, so who knows, she may be back.  On a side note, I did have dinner with her once, well me and about 60 other people at Mel's Drive In.  Just a booth away, we could barely tell it was her because she is the size of a teenie-tiny sprite.

This week, My TOP FIVE CHEESY PARENT SONGS

Will_smith_2 Just the Two of Us - Will Smith [YOUTUBE]
Even though it is about a boy, my girls love this one as we change the words.  The lyrics of this song are pretty good, meaningful, etc.  Take a listen, see what you think and try to name all the father/son combos.

Christina_aguilera Beautiful - Christina Aguilera [YOUTUBE]
Okay, cheese factor come in hard here, but you have to admit Xtina can SANG!  This video is a live version which shows her chops.  The video is totally obvious, but good anyway.

Butterfly_kisses Butterfly Kisses
- Bob Carlisle [YOUTUBE]
CHEESE ALERT!  CHEESE ALERT! So sue me, as a dad of three girls, I don't care.  And while there are some stereotypical female traits portrayed here, my girls do give butterfly kisses . . . and wet willies!

Spinners Sadie - The Spinners [YOUTUBE]
Not that my mom was Sadie, but there is an element of what she went through to raise this knucklehead.

Carole_king Child  of  Mine - Carole King  [YOUTUBE]
An all around great song.  Balance for the above mentioned Butterfly Kisses.  Cool video for you artsy-fartsy types.

Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps, DCI 20 years later

71_mandarins_84There we are, standing on the 50 yard line Camp Randall Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  The year was 1987 and this is a picture Kevin, Don and myself, sweet middle line for the Mandarin's Drum and Bugle Corps just after JUST placed FIRST at the Drum Corp International (DCI) Division III World Championships.  YES, World Champions, complete with Championship Ring which I have since lost :-(

For the uninitiated to the Drum Corps world, do not call this marching band! Drum Corps was a kick butt, precision laden, artistic, character-building experience at it's finest.  And while I think it is a TAD bit cushy to fly to events - back in my day we used the Flintstones bus, and LIKED it! - I suspect that it is still the same, one of the best youth activities in the world, yes WORLD!

This Sunday I am going to go to a Corps show for the first time in a long time, the Moonlight Classic.  I am taking the whole family to wax nostalgic as the Santa Clara Vanguard blow our hair back!  The Moonlight Classic is special to me because my grandparents were involved with this organization as they worked to raise money for young people and the arts.  Plus corps is in the family blood.  More than one of may aunts and uncles marched in the Stockton Commodores, a classic drum corps, I toured with them on more than one summer, my cousins ended up involved in Color Guard and I marched in the Mandarins for 6 years.

A few years ago they asked me to write about my experience on the 1987 championship year.  Hard to believe this reflection was written 10 years ago about an event that happened 20 years ago.   As I read this again, I get all weepy of course, but also realize how formative of a time this was for me and how much of an impact that it has made on who I am today, scary actually.  I can only hope that we find the same kind of experience - soccer, hula, dance, etc. - for the girls!

For your reading pleasure from the Mandarins Alumni Stories.

---------------------------

Bruce’s Story

1987 must hold something special for those of us now in our late twenties who have experienced the effects of high school in the 80s and adulthood in the 90s. What has influenced our lives? What drives us in work and family? What is our role in the leading of the world?

As I continually reflect on these questions, I always think back to my seven years in Mandarins and the 1987 DCI Championship. This first Championship is especially poignant for me because not only was this a great event in Mandarins history, but it was also my final year of marching, last year of high school, the year I moved out, etc.

We were a decent, good, all-around A-60 Drum and Bugle Corps -- a group of young people who worked hard, had great leadership, and approached our task with Passion, Integrity, Balance, and a sense of Identity. These four traits, even more than the actual '87 championship, are central parts of my Mandarins experience.

PASSION: Drum corps people are by nature passionate about the art of Drum Corps. Who else would give up their summers to travel thousands of miles by bus (yes, we used to do that), perform in Rodeo Arenas, spend hours of practice in 100-plus degree weather, and more? Does the fun ever end? This kind of dedication has always stayed with me because for many of us it was our last year. This created a feeling of "If we're going to do it, let's do it right!" This intensity, even beyond that of your run-of-the-mill drum corps freak, epitomizes the passion of the Mandarins.

INTEGRITY: I often remember saying to myself as we watched other corps that year, "I sure am glad we're not playing that!" I say that not because those corps were bad, but because many corps didn't seem to want to push the edges of what a small corps could do. If we were going to put anything on the field with the Mandarins name, it was going to be classy, intriguing, and it was going to be done well. We were challenged to try things that were complex, engaging and, once it came together, powerful. As far as I can tell, Mandarins has never and will never have it any other way.

BALANCE: Despite those hours spent in the sun at Kennedy, the camps at Cosumnes, and the continuous practice, there was a good balance of fun and work; and more than not, they were the same thing. I can admit it now, but I am sure that if Don Yee and I were first-year members in 1987, we would not have gotten away with as much goofing off as we did. After hearing stories of the many more hours that other corps put in and the strictness of their regiment, the time we spent on the practice field working and laughing together was even more special. I think it came down to knowing that we were there to have fun, be part of a community, and to put together a show we could be proud of. This levity -- not only on the field, but throughout all aspects of our time together -- showed everyone, inside and out of Mandarins, that we enjoyed what we did and our shared enthusiasm made us better when we hit the competition field.

IDENTITY: By far the biggest impact on me was the community built around our common Asian American roots. I can only say that it has been a vital part of my own understanding of identity as an Asian American. Mandarins connected me to a deep history rooted in Sacramento’s Chinatown, we because connected to Asian American churches and community groups throughout our travels, and we learned that it is okay to acknowledge and be proud of the distinctness of our culture. Mandarins showed the reality that lines between peoples are there; we can pretend they don't exist, or we can be proud of our uniqueness within a larger community. As I look forward to the many opportunities my own daughter will have to be part of communities that help to build her own character, I hope that she will find ones that nurture her in her identity as Mandarins nurtured mine.

My continued thoughts and prayers are with everyone whose lives Mandarins touches. The rich history, experience, and foundations that Mandarins shares with young people is invaluable. Let's remember and celebrate the amazing impact that this special group has had on those who have been, who are now, and who will become part of the Mandarins’ family.

Brain Candy for the Soul: Episode 6

EPISODE VI - What the?!?!?!?  Yes, pop culture filtered by yours truly.  A waste of time?  The pulse of contemporary culture? Nope, just weekly rant and reflection about the sites and sounds that have stimulated my brain for good or bad, and now regurgitated for your reading pleasure.

So_married_an_axe_murderer MOVIE // Harriet! Har-ee-et. Hard-hearted harbinger of haggis.
So I Married and Axe Murderer.  Man does that bring back the memories or what?  This movie had me totally crushing on Nancy Travis, Mike Myers makes evident his comic GENIUS and hey, it is set in San Francisco, so it must be good!  There are some classic scenes in this movie including the Huggy Bear references, the whole ode to hagas and who can forget this classic exchange between Myers as the Scottish father and the Aussie, Anthony LaPaglia now of Without a Trace as they talked about the little brother.  I little glimpse of the as of yet revealed Fat Bastard, I think so.

DAD: Look at the size of that boy's heed.
TONY: Shhh!
DAD: I'm not kidding, it's like an orange on a toothpick.
TONY: Shhh, you're going to give the boy a complex.
DAD: Well, that's a huge noggin. That's a virtual planetoid.
TONY: Shh!
DAD: Has it's own weather system.
TONY: Sh, sh, shh.
DAD: HEAD! MOVE!

Why don't I own this movie?!?!?!?

Il_divo MUSIC //  Want some cheese with that Opera?
Okay, for some reason I ordered both CD's from Il Divo, the four - "We're hunkier then the three tenors" - pop opera guys brought together by Simon Cowell.  Yes, Simon Cowell.  Take your pick of any of the remade songs and see if you can NOT giggle just a tad and thinking, "Why?"  Now maybe I am of the wrong gender or sexual orientation demographic, but really . . . "All By Myself" and "Unbreak My Heart?"  Now I am in to cheesy just as much as the next 38-year-old heterosexual Asian-American Presbyterian urbanite, but just because you CAN sing in Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and English, doesn't mean you HAVE to.

Sutdio_60 TELEVISION // Studio 60 Live on the Sunset Strip
What began with an AWESOME intro with Judd Hirsch ends sometime in the next few weeks as NBC presumably runs out the final taped episodes of this latest Aaron Sorkin offering.  And while some people would say that they Jumped the Shark long ago with some of the relationships, I think the witty and cutting banter makes any silliness all worth while.  Studio 60 dealt with issues such as race, religion, war, etc. with great care and acknowledgment of the complexities of each issue.  Brilliant, cutting and funny.  What more could you ask for?   If you missed this week's episode, you can watch it on NBC.

Dating Jesus

This has been on my "That's Blog" list for a while . . . someone sent me this article a few months back from Christianity Today, "Dating Jesus: When Lover of My Soul Language Goes to Far."  This particular article pokes fun at some Christian music and imagery that makes Jesus just a little too close.

I don't question the devotion of anyone who says she loves Christ intensely, whatever language she uses to express it.
But I have little patience for taking biblical metaphors too far and giving one's relationship with God an air of irreverent chumminess. Somehow, the scenario in which "his princess" shaves her legs for a date with Jesus seems to leave little room for fear of God.

I have always been a big proponent of "inclusive" or "expansive" language that helps us gain a broader understanding of who God is but I have always felt a little weird about a romantic Christ.

There is one thing to love Jesus, but quite another to LUUUUUUUUUV Jesus.

EPISODE III - What the?!?!?!?  Yes, pop culture filtered by yours truly.  A waste of time?  The pulse of contemporary culture? Nope, just weekly rant and reflection about the sites and sounds that have stimulated my brain for good or bad, and now regurgitated for your reading pleasure.

Pump_up_the_volume MOVIE // Talk Hard, Steal the Air
Didn't have a chance to see a flick this week, so I'll have to reach into the archives to enoucraage folks to add to their Queue and watch again Pump up the Volume.  Oh you know you always wanted to be a high renegade DJ with the coolness factor of Slater.  Don't deny it.  And what about Samantha Mathis, probably her best movie EVER.

Lakeside_fantastic_voyage MUSIC // Let's take a ride . . .
Okay, despite the fact that I seriously showing my age - I DO own current tunes, BTW - I am staying old school with this week's music choice.  This week, we venture back again to high school days with one of my favorite bands, Lakeside. 80's funk/pop/r&b DOES NOT get any better than the classic, Fantastic Voyage - not coolio's remake - and the slow jam classic, Say Yes.  Hey come on come on take a ride.

Tvsquad_2 TV Squad // A reason to clog your reader
Okay, maybe this is oversharing - me?!?!? - but here is just a glimpse into yet another guilty pleasure.  If you buy People magazine on trips, if you Tivo Best Week Ever or just happen to accidentally - but could stop any time - land on an entertainment show, this TV Squad Blog is for you.  While they do post on some shows that I do not watch or have broken my heart with it's over-the-top-ness, they are great at giving the scoop on latest episodes, predictions for the future and other things that needlessly fill our brain and make us think that characters are real people.  Let us dream.  For you fans out there, take a gander recaps of the Grey's Anatomy and The Office season enders . . . Go Pam and Jim!

For Thought

  • Quote "Peace"
“Peace it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
  • Benediction
Thank to all who have asked for this. This is a compilation of many different benedictions that I have heard throughout the years, no originality claimed, just some great opportunities to share it.

    Go forth into the world
With compassion and justice in your heart
    Give voice to the silent
    Give strength to the weak
    See one another
    Hear one another
    Care for one another
    And love one another
    It's all that easy
    And it's all that hard

Now may the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ
    The love of God
And the power of the Holy Spirit
Be with us all, now and forever more
    AMEN
