No, I’m not giving up Social Media for Lent. My 2013 Lenten discipline is to give thanks to God for those who have helped me to grow into who God intends for me to be and become. See all of my 2013 Lenten Thanks here.

High School Friends

At my 18th Birthday Party

High School Friends, 1990

Best men at my wedding in 1990.

This story really could begin, “a Buddhist, a Pentecostal and a Presbyterian walk into a Wendy’s . . . or raced each other down Florin Road . . . or cut school to take a nap . . . or went cruising on Freeport Boulevard . . . or failed miserably at a pylon prank . . . or made Junior Achievement* cool again . . . or . . .”

Suffice it to say that this is a group of friends with whom I share many stories that fall into the “Do as I say, not as I did.” parenting file. That said, these four guys changed my life in remarkable ways. An outsider to Luther Burbank High School, through our struggles, our celebrations and the mundane that is most of high school, my eyes were opened to a breadth new worldviews and new experiences. And while we all are not as connected as we used to be, whenever I think of friends, without whose presence in my life, I would be a very different person, Craig, Kevin, Eric and Jason rise to the top.

Today I give thanks for Kevin, Eric, Craig and Jason.

* Yeah, yeah, yeah, Junior Achievement is far from traditionally cool, but whatever it was fun.
