No, I’m not giving up Social Media for Lent. My 2013 Lenten discipline is to give thanks to God for those who have helped me to grow into who God intends for me to be and become. See all of my 2013 Lenten Thanks here.
This morning the family agreed that if a vote were taken on “Who we would most like to cuddle with all day?” our dog would win — paws down.
I have always been surrounded by animals: cats, dogs, rabbits, fish, hermit crabs, etc. and, as my mother will attest to, I have been known to bring home a stray dog or two or three. Not only have my pets – well maybe not the hermit crabs – exhibited an unconditional love that lowers my blood pressure and turns a crappy day into a basket of sunshine, but they have helped me to remember that we humans are not the only ones who have lives that must be taken into account as we think about and inhabit God’s creation. Over the years we have had pet rats, fish, crawdads, a water turtle and dogs all of which have lived loved and loving lives which in turn have help me to live a loved and loving life as well.
Today I give thanks for Fawn, Sadie, Nala, Girlfriend, Squeakers, Butterscotch, Ruffles, Trixie, JoDe SaBr and the rest of the furry and finned creatures who have been part of my life.
