Recipe: Honey Black Tea with Chia SeedsAbout a year ago our family got turned on to the latest hipster, super food, chia seeds. We put them in smoothies, make pudding and, my favorite — added to tea. After playing around with the amounts, I finally have the portions correct for a strong, slightly sweet chia drink that’s good for you and tastes awesome!

Honey Black Tea with Chia Seeds

  • Yield: Makes one gallon
  • Time: 20 minutes plus 2-3 hour to chill

Honey Black Tea with Chia Seeds - Tea Bags


  • 10-20 tea bags, tags removed, I’m partial to plain ol’ Lipton tea bags
  • One cup local honey or other sweetener to taste
  • 2/3 cup chia seeds, we use Bob’s Red Mill Chia Seeds
  • One gallon pitcher or sun tea jar
  • One gallon of water for aforementioned pitcher 🙂


  • Bring water to a boil
  • Tie tea bags together and place in the pitcher
  • When water is a boil, pour water into the jar

  • Let tea bags steep for a two hours
  • Remove tea bags and place jar in the refrigerator
  • Once tea is cool, stir in chia seeds
  • To avoid clumping, a few times during the first hour use a whisk to stir seeds
  • Pour over ice and enjoy!


  • Pre-dissolve the honey or other sweetener in boiling water
  • Use flavored tea bags
  • For stronger tea let tea bags steep overnight
