The Twenty-seventh Day of Lent

March 20, 2015

4:00 am is an ungodly time to wake up.

In order to make it home in time to see the girls’ track meet, I hopped on a place that required me to request a 4:00 am wake-up call. And, as usual, I had a hard time falling asleep fearing that I might miss aid wake-up call.

So, it is fair to say that I arrived at the airport a tad bit grumpy and tired. Not only was I taking a chance on stand-by, but did I mention — 4:00 am wake-up?

And then, as I walked up to the gate the gate agent had no computer at the boarding area, so was checking people off the list using a pen and dot-matrix print out. Now in other moments, when I was not still a bit comatose from a 4:00 am wake-up call, I would would have made some cheeky remark about the dot matrix printer not being a good indication of airline innovation.

I made so such cheeky remarks.

Instead, I just stood in line waiting with the rest of the people. And despite my 4:00 am wake-up call, I did not let my impatience get to me. Others were not so restrained. Many were loudly voicing their displeasure and all I could think was “Man, Delta just set up the gate agent to fail.” Sure, it was not a HUGE deal in the scheme of life, but for travelers, it was a marked delay in the process, and one that had no immediate solution.

I must say, she handled the whole thing with grace, about 95% humor, and all the efficiency that a pen and dot-matrix printer could provide. I got on the flight, in fact, we all got on the flight and it turned out fine.

And I made it home in time for the meet.

See you tomorrow.
