Below is a chapter from Rule #2: Don’t Be an Asshat: An Official Handbook for Raising Parents and Children. Over time we will be posting most of the book, though, should this inspire you to buy a copy, we would not be offended 🙂 Posted chapters can be found in the Table of Contents.
Rule #59: Be adventurous (Dad)
A few years back, I made you go watch Roller Derby. We had no connection to Roller Derby, and no one had ever shown any interest in it. However, I had always wanted to check it out, and your mom and I hardly ever pass up an opportunity to have you experience the power that is kick-ass women.
So we went, and we soaked in the culture and the vibe. We ate hipster cupcakes and bought stickers, and you got to meet one of the skaters. And while we chose not to sit in the section called the Suicide Zone, it was pretty thrilling.
And then we went home, and we have not been back to see another Roller Derby since then. We tried it; we ventured into a new space, a space that we had zero context or knowledge of; and we simply lived that night.
There will be many forces telling you to remain where you are, be grateful for the life you have now, and avoid taking any risks. And while there are certainly times to be careful and deliberate, please do not be so cautious that you miss out on the adventures that may be beckoning from near or far.
I hope that, in your long life, you will take many adventures: experience different parts of the world, meet people whose passions will stretch your mind, and try new activities that will expand your experience of living. As you do so, be open to finding new passions in your own life and simply experiencing the adventure for the moment that it is.
