Should I Speak Up and Act Out?

Should I Speak Up and Act Out?

Questions I ask myself in times of social, political, and cultural turmoil.

While most directly related to how folks are deciding whether or not to speak out about what is happening in Gaza, this weekend, I posted some of the questions that I ask myself when deciding if, how, or when to speak out or act up in times of political, social, or cultural turmoil. This is how I navigate moral chaos and try to make faithful and just decisions.

WHY AM I HESITATING?

What gives me pause?
What am I afraid of?
What am I realistically risking?

WHAT IS MY SPIRIT SAYING?

My heart?
My mind?
My gut?
My soul?

WHAT ARE THOSE AROUND ME SAYING?

Trusted resources?
Trusted colleagues?
Trusted friends?
Faithful ancestors?

WHAT IS MY FAITH SAYING?

Prayer and reflection?
Sacred texts and rituals?
Called community?
My God?

AM I ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY?

AM I COMPLICIT IF I DON'T SPEAK OUT OR ACT UP?

AM I ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY?

WHEN MY FUTURE ANCESTORS REFLECT ON MY ACTIONS WILL THEY FEEL LAMENT AND SHAME OR RELIEF AND PRIDE?

AM I LISTENING TO THE CALL OF THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY MY ACTION OR INACTION?

In a time when there is no shortage of injustices in the world, I hope these questions will help you discern how, when, and if you will add your voice and presence to the many others already in the fight.
