What I hope to offer is a textured understanding of Jesus that may
meet folks in various stages of curiosity, confusion, and contemplation:

If you are curious about Jesus for the first or fiftieth time, I hope the Jesus I offer is a meaningful one.

If you have had Jesus-adjacent experiences through friends or family and are now interested in diving a little deeper, I hope you will be inspired to keep exploring on your own or with others.

If you have been frustrated by the domesticated version of Jesus, one marked by indifference about the injustices of the world, I hope to share Jesus, the disrupter and teller of truth.

If you are tired of the one-dimensional version of Jesus that is expressed only in words, only in actions, or only personally, I hope to share Jesus, the holder of the richness of discipline and tradition.

If you have been harmed or traumatized by the ways Jesus has been weaponized against you and others, I hope to share Jesus, the gatherer, healer, and cultivator of belonging.

If you are drained by the version of Jesus that lacks inspiration, imagination, and joy, I hope to share Jesus, the creative unleasher of imagination.

After nearly thirty years of ministry, I am still on the same journey as so many others in understanding and following Jesus, meaning that my faith is always in flux. My personal and communal understanding and experiences with Jesus shift, change, and adapt as the world’s circumstances dictate. While some see a change in theological understanding as a weakness, I see it as a strength. Just as my actual muscles need to be stretched and strengthened as my physical body moves through different stages of life, my spiritual and theological muscles must do the same when my experience of the world expands.

I am constantly amazed by the revelations about my faith that abound when I embrace the idea that I will never be done getting to know the one we call Jesus the Christ. In short, this book is as much about my own exploration and learning as it is about yours. So welcome and thank you for taking me along.
